Conservation Adviser

You will be a great communicator and will be working closely with farmers, crofters, and communities across the Orkney Islands. The Conservation Adviser will develop and deliver advice and projects working alongside them to benefit the rich wildlife found there.
Key Responsibilities
- Work as part of the Scottish Advisory team and closely with the other Orkney-based staff and projects.
- Manage breeding wader species such as Curlew, Redshank, and Lapwing.
- Engage in partnership working with Orkney Islands Council, NatureScot, and agricultural support organisations.
- Conduct inter-island travel and occasional overnight stays on remoter islands.
- Serve as RSPB Scotland's main link to the agricultural community for advice on bird and wildlife management.
- Support the current Species on the Edge project and collaborate with staff on various species including arctic and little tern, great yellow bumblebee, and Scottish primrose.
- Conduct survey work on birds and habitats to support agri-environment/climate schemes.
- Provide direct advice to farms and manage volunteers as needed.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Excellent communication and advocacy skills.
- Strong bird and wildlife/habitat survey skills relating to UK uplands and coasts.
- Proficient in writing management recommendations, reports, and GIS mapping.
- Competent user of MS Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Teams.
- Significant knowledge of upland and island farming systems and agricultural support schemes.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A valid UK driving licence is essential.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Practical experience with agricultural grant schemes.
- Experience in managing contractors for practical measures like fencing and vegetation management.
- Knowledge of peatland management, seabirds, and coastal habitats.
- Flexibility to work from office or home.
This is a Permanent role for 37.5 hours per week, involving lone working and fieldwork in remote locations with occasional weekend and evening work.
