The Royal Marsden Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine is dedicated to providing a consultant-delivered service across the Trust, emphasizing exceptional evidence-based and compassionate care for cancer patients. With 7 operating theatres at the Chelsea site and 2 at the Sutton site, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust handle a complex mix of major surgeries, including:
- Upper gastrointestinal procedures (oesophagectomy, gastrectomy)
- Lower gastrointestinal surgeries (total pelvic exenteration, rectal and colonic resections)
- Gynaecological surgeries (ovarian debulking, hysterectomy)
- Urological operations (prostatectomy, cystectomy, nephrectomy)
- Sarcoma resections (retroperitoneal sarcoma resection, melanoma and peripheral sarcoma resection)
- Head and neck surgeries
- Plastics (breast free flap reconstruction, pelvic reconstruction)
The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust have a well-established robotic programme, and additional services such as breast surgery and brachytherapy are performed in Chelsea theatres. The theatres are equipped with modern equipment, including electronic anaesthetic charts and almost exclusive use of total intravenous anaesthesia.
At Sutton, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust's services include:
- Breast, sarcoma, and plastics procedures (typically day cases)
- A vascular access service (adult and paediatric)
Consultants provide anaesthetic support for patients undergoing interventional radiology procedures, endoscopy at Chelsea, and additional endoscopy at the newly opened Oak Cancer Centre in Sutton. The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust's team also supports paediatric patients undergoing oncology procedures, including:
- Radiotherapy
- Intrathecal chemotherapy
- Bone marrow aspirates
- Imaging (MRI, MIBG scans)
