Lay member of the RCVS Ethics Review Panel (ERP): role description

Background

  • In July 2016, the RCVS launched the Ethics Review Panel (ERP) to provide ethics approval for practice-based veterinary surgeons and registered veterinary nurses.
  • The ERP reviews research projects involving various species and sociological studies involving veterinary staff.
  • Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons seek to appoint two new lay members to complement Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons's existing panel members.
  • Membership of the ERP allows individuals to contribute to the future of evidence-based veterinary medicine.

Time commitments

  • Initially, one half-day of remote training in 2024.
  • Two half-day meetings of the ERP per year, with routine work conducted remotely.
  • Each application will require approximately 2 hours for review, with an estimated 1-2 applications per month.
  • Appointment for 3 years, renewable at the RCVS's discretion.

Compensation

  • Post-holders can claim a loss of earnings allowance, with reasonable out-of-pocket expenses reimbursed.

Scope of the post

  • Members will apply their experience to consider ethics approval applications.

Specific tasks for the Panel

  • Consider applications for ethics approval and decide on scientific soundness and ethical adequacy.
  • Attend ERP meetings to discuss applications and contribute to best practices.

Criteria for the role

  • Experience in professional regulation and ethics, preferably in clinical veterinary practice or research.
  • Experience in reviewing applications for scientific soundness and ethical content.
  • Good written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Experience in pet ownership is advantageous.
